Interview tips

The short time you spend at a job interview can have a dramatic effect on your career prospects and it is important that you perform well - no matter how good your career record is to date. The employment interview remains an important step towards fulfilling your ambitions.

Here are the Key Personnel 10 golden rules for all interviewees:

  1. Do your homework! Find out as much as you can about the company you're visiting.
  2. Turn off your mobile phone and get rid of any chewing gum.
  3. Although it is nerve-racking, try not to have a cigarette just prior to attending an interview.
  4. Keep accessories (such as jewellery and makeup) simple.
  5. Be positive throughout the interview, particularly when talking about previous jobs or employers.
  6. Do not interrupt the interviewer.
  7. Use plain English and avoid technical jargon, abbreviations or your own company terminology.
  8. Always give full answers to questions and include examples.
  9. Prepare some questions to ask the interviewer about the role, company and culture.
  10. Smile! They are already interested in you, you just need to convince them you are the right person.
